Do you give away your power when dieting?
I get a lot of emails from people who are exploring nutritional counseling because they want to lose weight.
“Will you put me on a plan?” is a commonly asked question. The answer is yes…and no, because it really depends.
I grew up in a house where my mom was always on a diet, so after gaining some weight in high school, my mom and I started dieting together. We religiously ate salads, cottage cheese on cantaloupe, and drank these disgusting Alba 77 chemical shakes!
I shed some of the weight, but was miserable. Someone else was driving the bus, telling me what to eat. And I agreed to get on the bus because I wanted results. In college, I went on Weight Watchers and successfully lost weight again. This time felt more empowering, because I could at least choose which way I wanted to feel deprived 😉
All kidding aside, there is a point to starting with a baseline plan to give you the structure and understanding of how to build a basic framework of your eating while you dial in to your hunger/fullness, cravings, energy, and what foods make you feel the most happy and satisfied.
The key is knowing that whatever plan you ultimately create has to feel sustainable while getting you results. And that I can give you all the advice in the world but until you take ownership of it and decide you want to be in the driver’s seat, it will never be authentic or give you long-lasting results.
So before you take your next bite or start your next meal, ask yourself a couple questions:
1. Am I truly hungry?
2. What do I want to eat?
3. What does my body need to eat?
And let me know how that goes for you!
